Autumn Pop-Up Swap Featured in Rolling Stone

February 1, 2018

It’s not every day you check your email and find a message waiting from producer with Rolling Stone. A flurry of emails and a few days later, a film crew rolled into town, and we threw together a pop-up swap to showcase our wonderful bartering community here in Portland, Oregon.

Check out the full episode of American Beauty: Dispatches from a Country United, Rolling Stone’s travel and culture series highlighting gems from around the United States.

Portland’s sharing community takes front and center in the Pacific Northwest edition, and we were proud to invited a few trusty swappers to gather for a whirlwind mini-swap at Pip’s Original to share the spirit and spunk of our PDX Food Swap.

Inside Portland’s Cash-Free Barter Economy by David Amsden

When my friend Emily and I hosted our very first @pdxfoodswap in 2010, I had no idea the fun and surprises in store. Almost seven years later, my surplus jars of peaches multiplied exponentially into a pantry full of delightful homemade foods, a community of inspiring swappers, and chance after chance to encourage so many more people to make food with love and share it with generosity. . During the year I left Oregon to travel around the world, my terrific swap co-host @rosemarried stepped up to keep the swap alive, and I'm so grateful to her and so many other wonderful people who have given their time and energy to our cashless, grassroots endeavor. . When @rollingstone asked if they could highlight our #pdxfoodswap, @rosemarried and I laughed and said of course! With a few days' notice, we threw together an impromptu swap with our faithful regulars at the one-and-only @pipsoriginal. . The video and article are up now on Rolling Stone as part of their American Beauty web series — and my Mom won't stop humming somethingorother about "the thrill that'll gitcha when you get your picture on the cover of the Rollin' Stone" (Thanks to Nate at @pipsoriginal for photo of Lindsay and me with the camera crew. Swipe through to catch a peek, and go to rollingstone.com for the full video.) . P.S. If you've never been but want to come join us, head to pdxfoodswap.com and add your name to the mailing list. The last thing you'll ever get from us is spam, promise. It's 100% dedicated to building community and sending invites for upcoming events. 🍯🍒🍑🥒💛✨

We wouldn’t be who we are without each of you, working on your labors of love in kitchens and gardens and wild patches of dandelions all around Portland. Thank you for sharing the food swap love with us and with the world!
