What a pleasure to watch a great idea take hold and spread its way around the world.
Our PDX Food Swap grew from a combination of local bounty and online inspirations, and since 2010 we’ve seen the modern foodswap movement multiply exponentially both here in the Pacific Northwest and across borders…and oceans…and languages…
Recently, we were contacted by radio producer Alexandra Augustin. She’s visiting Portland from Vienna, Austria, and spent a warm August morning meeting with a few PDX Food Swappers to gather stories, snap photos, sample goodies (thanks to Lindsay of Rosemarried for the fresh batch of Slow Cooker Blueberry Jam & just-pulled-from-the-oven scones!), and assemble a story about the PDX Food Swap to air on ORF Radio Ö1/ FM4 in Austria, Switzerland, and Germany.
The two hour feature (including all sorts of local food tales from Portland and beyond) is set to air sometime in early 2014. Interviews will be in English, though I hear that the main program will be in German (any translators out there in our audience??).
Many thanks to Kris, Kathleen, and Veronica for joining Lindsay and me and sharing their favorite food swap stories. Alexandra will share her photos from the day on the station’s online companion site, and we’ll be sure to post links when they’re live!
Eager to take part in the next swap?
Registration opens soon for the September 15th, 2013 event…

It’s beautiful to see what everyone’s making, sharing, and celebrating…and it’s a delight to plant new ideas (and grow new friendships!) across the city and around the world, all from the humble goings-on in our own little kitchens…
